Matthew R. Tavares, Esq.
Associate Attorney, Matthew R. Tavares
As an associate in the firm, I concentrate my practice in general litigation matters. My work involves several practice areas, including general litigation, collections, landlord/ tenant, employment, workers compensation, commercial litigation, real property and estates litigation, municipal court, and expungements.
Prior to joining Shanahan & Voigt, LLC, I was an associate attorney at Fein, Such, Kahn & Sherpard, P.C. where my practice focused on landlord/tenant matters involving secured creditors. Immediately after graduating law school, I had the privilege of serving as the judicial law clerk to the Honorable H. Matthew Curry, J.S.C. in the Hunterdon County Superior Court, Chancery Division, Family Law Part. As a judicial law clerk I was able to gain invaluable insight as to what it takes to be a good practitioner in the eyes of the court and in the eyes of the client. Additionally, as a judicial law clerk, I was trained as a mediator by the Superior Court of New Jersey and I have extensive experience in mediating small claims and special civil matters.
My legal career began at Western New England University School of Law in Springfield, Massachusetts where I received my law degree in 2013. While at Western New England University, I had the honor of being selected to the School of Law’s Appellate Moot Court Board. Additionally, I had the opportunity to represent my school and argue at the Williams Institute National Moot Court Competition in Los Angeles, California. Another privilege I had while attending Western New England, was the occasion to represent individuals and partners in the formation of their small businesses through the School of Law’s Small Business Clinic.
Prior to attending Western New England University School of Law, I attended the University of Delaware where I earned a Bachelor of Arts degree with a concentration in American History and Criminal Justice in 2010. I am a graduate of Phillipsburg High School and have lived in the surrounding community for nearly twenty years. I am a member of the Hunterdon County Bar Association.
